Nature lovers and hikers should head to the Parco Regionale di Colfiorito on the border with the Marches. At 500 acres, it is Umbria’s smallest natural park and takes much of its form from the flat piani (plains), the remains of lakes that have either dried up naturally here or been drained by man. The site also incorporates the Palude di Colfiorito (Colfiorito Marsh), a Ramsar site, designated under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands signed in Iran in 1971 as being of special importance for nature conservation. It’s particularly noted for the wildflowers and aquatic orchids that bloom here in spring, as well as migratory wildfowl such as grey herons, purple herons, bitterns, mallards and spoonbills.
